Privacy and security

Encryption, app lock, sensitive fields, privacy mode, recovery key, and travel lock.

What Kuriosa stores, and where

Your collection, its photos, and its documents are stored encrypted, on this iPhone or in the folder you chose for several iPhones. Kuriosa has no account, no server, no analytics, no crash reports, and no ads. Nothing is sent to us.

Location, camera, and author details are removed from every photo and document when you add it.

The one thing Kuriosa loads from the internet: when your collection has prices in other currencies, the public exchange rates of the European Central Bank. Nothing about you or your collection is sent. You can turn it off with Convert totals in Settings › Display.

Settings › Security and privacy › What Kuriosa stores explains it in the app.

The first start: what stays private.

App lock

With the app lock, Face ID or your passcode opens Kuriosa, and locking closes your collection.

  • Turn it on or off in Settings › Security and privacy.
  • Lock after chooses when: Immediately, After 1 minute, After 5 minutes, or After 15 minutes in the background.

The app lock needs a passcode on your iPhone.

Sensitive fields

Serial numbers, VINs, and certificate numbers are sensitive: they are hidden until you tap them, never shown on cards, and left out of exports and labels unless you include them. Including them takes a clear warning and Face ID or your passcode, every time. Any field can be made sensitive in Edit fields.

Privacy mode

Privacy mode hides all values and sensitive fields while you show your collection to someone. Turn it on with the eye in the Overview, in the ⋯ menu of the Collections tab, or in Settings › Security and privacy.

Recovery key

Your recovery key opens your collection on a new iPhone, after a restore, and when the travel lock is on. Only your emergency sheet has it; Kuriosa keeps no copy.

If your emergency sheet is lost, make a new key while Kuriosa still opens: Settings › Security and privacy › Create new recovery key, and print the new sheet. The old sheet stops working, and older backups open on another iPhone only with the old key, so make a new backup.

Travel lock

For a trip, Kuriosa can forget this iPhone's key to your collection. Then Face ID and the passcode no longer open it, only the recovery key does.

  1. In Settings › Security and privacy, tap Travel lock.
  2. Check your recovery key: type it, or tap Read with camera, then Check and turn on.
  3. Kuriosa closes. Take your emergency sheet with you, or keep it where you can reach it.

To end the travel lock, open Kuriosa and enter the recovery key, or let the camera read it. Everything is as before. While the travel lock is on, the reminders of your pieces are removed; they come back afterwards.
