Getting started
The first start, your recovery key, and your first collection.

The first start
Kuriosa needs no account. When you open it for the first time, it shows what it promises and what stays private, then sets up your encrypted collection on your iPhone.
The first screen also offers two other ways in:
- I already use Kuriosa on another iPhone opens a library you share through a folder. See One library on several iPhones.
- Restore from a backup brings back a collection from a backup file. See Backups.

Your recovery key
Your collection is encrypted. On a new iPhone, or after restoring a backup on another device, Kuriosa asks for its recovery key once. Without the key the collection cannot be opened, and nobody can restore it, not even the makers of Kuriosa.
- Tap Print emergency sheet and print the sheet, or write the key down by hand.
- Keep the sheet where you keep important papers, for example in a safe, apart from your iPhone.
- Confirm that you have printed or written down the key, then tap Start my collection.
You can make a new key at any time in Settings › Security and privacy › Create new recovery key. The old emergency sheet stops working then, so make a new backup afterwards.
Your first collection
- On the Collections tab, tap New collection.
- Choose a category, for example watches, coins, or wine, or a custom collection for anything else.
- Check the name and tap Create.
- Tap Add item and start with a photo, or only with a name. A name is all you need to save; everything else can follow later.
The free version holds 25 pieces, and wishes on the wishlist do not count. See Free, Unlimited, and Pro.
Finding your way
Kuriosa has four tabs at the bottom:
- Collections: your collections and their pieces. Settings are behind the gear at the top left.
- Wishlist: the pieces you are looking for.
- Overview: what your collection is worth, by collection and by place.
- Search: every field of every piece.
The scan button at the top left of every tab opens the camera to read a QR label, a barcode, or an inventory number such as K-0001.
