Backups

One encrypted file with everything, saved where you choose, by hand or automatically.

What a backup is

A backup is one file with everything: your collections, photos, documents, and history. It is encrypted and opens only on this iPhone or with your recovery key. Kuriosa keeps no copy anywhere else, so where you save it is up to you: iCloud Drive, a computer, or a USB stick.

Back up now

  1. Open Settings › Backup.
  2. Tap Back up now.
  3. Choose where to save the file.

From time to time, Kuriosa first asks you to check your recovery key, so that you know the backup will open on another iPhone. Type the key from your emergency sheet, or tap Read with camera, then Check and back up.

Last backup shows when you last made one. Under Reminder, Kuriosa can remind you Every week or Every month with a notification that contains nothing from your collection.

Automatic backups

  1. In Settings › Backup, set Automatic backup to Every day, Every week, or Every month.
  2. Check your recovery key when Kuriosa asks for it.
  3. Choose the Folder, for example a folder in iCloud Drive.
  4. Under Keep, choose how many automatic backups stay: The last 3, 5, 10, or All.

Kuriosa saves a backup into that folder on its own when you open it, a backup is due, and something changed. Your collection is locked while your iPhone is locked, so this happens only while Kuriosa is open. Only older automatic backups are removed, never the ones you saved yourself.

Restore

  1. In Settings › Backup, tap Restore from backup and choose the file. A backup file in Files or a backup sent with AirDrop also opens in Kuriosa.
  2. Check the date of the backup, then tap Restore.
  3. If this iPhone does not have the key for the backup, for example on a new iPhone, enter the recovery key from your emergency sheet: Restore with recovery key.

Restoring replaces the collection on this iPhone. The replaced collection is kept until the next restore: Undo last restore › Bring back the replaced collection switches back.

On a new iPhone, choose Restore from a backup on the very first screen.

History

The list at the end of Settings › Backup shows every backup and restore, with what it held. It is kept with your collection, so it is in every backup too.

Your data

Your data shows how much space Kuriosa's own files take: photos with their thumbnails and cut-outs, files, and the catalogue.

  • Photos and Files list everything, largest first. Select and Remove take photos or files off their pieces, with one Undo.
  • Photos and files you removed, or those of pieces you deleted, are kept so that Undo can bring them back. They are listed as Removed, still kept.
  • Delete for good deletes them. Afterwards they cannot come back, not even with Undo. Backups you made before still contain them.
